In a first for any Rocky Bay supported accommodation house, our team supported house mates and good friends, Fenton D’Rozario and Jason Holgate, to travel to Bali for a long-awaited tropical holiday and their first trip together.
The duo, who were supported by Rocky Bay Support Workers, Kim Meagher and Dani Janusevski, stayed at a private villa in the popular holiday spot of Seminyak for five days.
The trip was a first for Fenton – who had never travelled out of Western Australia or on a plane – who said he was excited but also a little nervous not knowing what to expect from a flight. The experience of supporting customers on an overseas trip was also a first for Kim and Dani.
“This is a really great opportunity for these guys”, says Kim, who has been supporting Rocky Bay customers for four years.
The travel crew had originally planned a cruise to Broome in 2020, which was cancelled due to the pandemic. After many discussions and much planning, Bali was decided to be an adventurous alternative!
Jason himself is a seasoned traveler, enjoying many an interstate and international holiday with his family, including Bali. Jason has been living at Rocky Bay’s supported accommodation in Eden Hills for 18-months – his first time living independently from his family. Team Leader Carol O’Brien explains he has loved living independently for the first time.
“The staff have worked really hard with transitioning Jason (to supported accommodation). He is just a gem to have around.”
Fenton and Jason indulged in some amazing experiences during their trip, including Waterbom Park, taking in cultural sites and religious ceremonies, visiting the monkey forest, as well as the obligatory shopping and indulgent massages.
“The boys loved Bali,” says Kim. “They had fun at the water park braving the slides and floating aimlessly on a donut ring down the lazy river. They interacted with monkeys and elephants and fed the tigers!”
The boys even had the time to party and enjoy the nightlife.
Fenton is no stranger to adventure, having experienced indoor skydiving, a scenic helicopter flight, and a five-day sailing experience on the STS Leeuwin II as part of the Leeuwin Ocean Adventure foundation’s Ultimate challenge Voyage – all made possible thanks to support from Rocky Bay’s Wishing Tree.
In addition to his love of extreme experiences, Fenton has spent the past several years on a healthy living journey to reach his weight loss goals, which he has consistently met.
“Fenton’s done a whole 360 (since he joined Rocky Bay’s Eden Hill supported accommodation),” says Carol.
“He has entered the HBF Run for a Reason in May, he did the Colour Run earlier this year and the Mudfest. Jason and Fenton do a lot of organised walks together, as Jason loves walking. Fenton has also just booked in for four weeks of kayaking lessons, as well as swimming lessons to support his kayaking.”
Impressively, Fenton will also embark on a leadership program with WA Disabled Sports Association (WADSA) in the coming months, as well as continuing his job with Westcare Incorporated – a not-for-profit disability enterprise that provides employment and training – working three days a week.
By all accounts, Fenton and Jason’s first overseas trip together was a great success, and our team look forward to being able to support more customers to see the world and live their best life!
