When Rocky Bay customer Peter’s much anticipated respite stay in Perth seemed impossible due to funding constraints, emergency respite provided support.

Peter, who lives in Albany, typically visits Perth a couple of times each year, staying in Rocky Bay’s respite ‘guest houses’ to enjoy a much-needed break, spend time with his sister Kath and engage in his favourite activities.

However, earlier this year, circumstances changed when Peter’s mother, his primary caregiver, experienced a serious medical emergency.

“We had to scramble,” Peter’s sister Kath said.

“With Mum unable to care for him anymore, Peter’s living situation shifted dramatically. His NDIS plan was nearly exhausted, and his September trip to Perth, a highlight of his year, seemed out of reach,” Kath said.

Peter’s regular respite visits are more than just a holiday. They are fundamental to his routine, allowing him to enjoy the things he loves most.

These include attending the Royal Show, watching planes at the Perth Airport viewing platform, visiting museums, exploring parks and spending time with friends.

The story continues...

Recognising the importance of this stay, Rocky Bay Team Leader Amanda worked swiftly to secure Emergency Relief Respite Funding (ERRF) for Peter, ensuring he could access a respite stay at no charge and enjoy two weeks at Rocky Bay’s guest house ‘Parkland Retreat’.

During his time at the Parkland Retreat, Peter was supported with personal care, daily living tasks and community access.

Excursions included the E-Shed disco, Whiteman Park, Transperth train to Fremantle and a visit to the airport for plane spotting.

How we helped

For Peter, these stays are transformative.

“He comes back so calm, you can see the change in him” Kath said.

“He talks about everything he’s done, shares his photos and just feels fulfilled,” Kath said.

Without ERRF, Peter would have missed these opportunities.

“He would’ve been dreadfully disappointed, asking why he couldn’t come and do what he loves.

“Missing out would have affected him deeply,” Kath said.

ERRF didn’t just benefit Peter, it also provided relief for his family.

“With Mum’s health issues and her now living with me, knowing Peter was happy and cared for during those two weeks was such a weight off my shoulders.

“It gave me peace of mind and time to focus on everything else going on,” Kath said.

Peter’s situation highlights the impact of ERRF in bridging gaps when funds run out.

“ERRF allowed Peter to maintain his routine and gives him normality and choice,” Kath said.

“He knows the staff, he’s comfortable, and it feels like home for him,” Kath concluded.
