Rocky Bay’s long-time customer Chris is on the cusp of achieving his Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award, thanks to self-determination and Rocky Bay’s support.
Chris began his Duke of Edinburgh journey several years ago, inspired by his family, to ensure he continued his education.
The program, which includes three levels, Bronze, Silver and Gold, empowers participants to develop their interests through self-directed learning, often encouraging them outside their comfort zones.
The program offers Chris a platform to achieve his personal, professional and developmental goals, aligning with the support he receives at Rocky Bay to reach his unique objectives.
Rocky Bay Lead Support Worker Craig supports Chris on this journey, with Chris set to achieve his Gold award by mid-next year.
“Chris and I have worked together on his personal development, workplace understanding and safety awareness,” Craig said.
A key component of Chris achieving Gold involves work experience, which he has been completing at Intersport Armando Sports.
Chris has successfully taken on tasks in the warehouse, including flattening cardboard boxes, price-tagging items and recycling materials.
“Chris now can assess a job and understand the stages needed to complete it,” Craig said.
Craig highlighted Chris’s improved attention to detail, particularly when it comes to tasks like pricing materials.
The Duke of Edinburgh experience has allowed Chris to overcome his fear of heights and develop resilience and determination to achieve his objectives.
“Chris has grown so much,” Craig said.
“He’s developed social skills, recognises different environments and interacts with people accordingly.
“He’s also developed strong associations with familiar people and understands how to engage with them,” Chris said.
Another significant change in Chris is how he handles disappointment.
“He’s built strategies and tactics to feel his emotions without letting them dictate his behaviour,” Craig said.
“Chris now has a saying – ‘Put it behind you and move on’.”
Chris credits Craig as a source of support throughout his journey. “Craig coaches me,” Chris said.
As Chris approaches the finish line for his Gold award, he reflects positively on the experience.
“I’ll be happy,” Chris said, looking forward to achieving this milestone.
