For parents Terry and Liz, knowing their son Bradley is only two kilometres away in a Rocky Bay Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) has brought them a sense of relief they didn’t think was possible.
Bradley, a Rocky Bay customer for 15 years, recently moved into his brand-new SDA in Rockingham, ensuring he is independent and in a community he loves.
Bradley lives with significant medical conditions, including epilepsy and the effects of a car accident, requiring specialised care and a living environment tailored to his needs.
For Liz, knowing that Bradley now has access to the care he needs while remaining close to home has been life changing.
“It’s such a relief, I don’t think anyone could understand the relief,” Liz said.
“When you have a child with a disability, you constantly worry about their future, where they will live, how they will be cared for.
“Now, I know he’s in a place that supports him, and that peace of mind is such a relief,” Liz said.
Finding suitable housing was a challenge due to delays in acquiring NDIS funding and state-wide construction delays, resulting in a temporary stay in a location further from family.
However, late last year, Liz and Terry received the welcome news that a Rocky Bay SDA in Rockingham would soon be ready for Bradley.
“Being able to visit him easily, knowing he’s comfortable and has the right support, it makes all the difference,” Liz said.
Bradley’s new home not only provides accessibility but also ensures he can maintain his connections to the community he has been a part of for years.
He can enjoy the things he loves doing, like watching the boats at the Rockingham foreshore.
Despite the delays, Liz and Terry agreed the outcome couldn’t have been better with the new location even more ideal.
“There were times we worried about when it would all come together, but in the end, it worked out,” she says.
“Bradley’s home is perfect for him, and being so close to us is great.”
His parents have noticed a significant positive shift in his well-being since the move.
“He’s happy and was excited about his first night,” Liz said.
For families facing similar challenges, Liz encourages them to explore the options available and to advocate for the right support systems.
“It can feel overwhelming, but there are people and organisations like Rocky Bay who have the resources and can help.
“I have faith in Rocky Bay,” Liz said.
