Celebrating uniqueness and World Autism Awareness Day with Theo’s story.
For Year 7 student Theo, having Autism means having a great memory, a love for facts and a wide range of interests.
But more than anything, Theo says it means “I am unique in a great way.”
“I feel good about having Autism,” Theo says.
As Theo continues to understand what having Autism means for him, he’s discovering the communication styles and environments that make him feel the most supported.
“Most of the time I like talking but sometimes I use sign language,” Theo says.
While Theo enjoys interacting with others, he finds loud noises challenging and appreciates when people check in on him by simply asking if he’s okay.
What does he wish more people knew about Autism? “That people with Autism are individuals, special and interesting,”
Encouraging Theo to be himself is one of the best ways to help him feel comfortable and happy.
Theo is enjoying his first year of high school, his favourite subjects are cooking and drama.
Outside of the classroom, he’s a big fan of trains, whether it’s real trains or LEGO train sets.
He’s also an avid supporter of the Essendon Football Club and keeps up with what’s happening in the world, particularly when it comes to the weather.
At home, Theo enjoys spending time with his pet rabbits, Coco and Obi-Bun and values having the space to engage in his favourite activities.
When asked what advice he would give to his friends about understanding Autism, Theo says, “show their support and ask about my interests.”
