Celebrating Darryl Dempster’s Artwork in Reconciliation WA’s 2025 Banner Project
Rocky Bay is proud to announce that supported accommodation customer Darryl Dempster has partnered with Reconciliation WA to feature his artwork Snake Nest in the 2025 National Reconciliation Week Street Banner Project.
‘Snake Nest’: A Story of Connection
‘Snake Nest’ stands as a testament to the rich cultural tapestry of the Indigenous peoples, blending traditional symbolism with contemporary artistic expression. It encourages a dialogue about the importance of family, nurturing, and the natural world, offering a powerful reminder of the beauty that lies in our shared experiences and relationships. Through this artwork, Dempster invites us to honour the sacredness of motherhood and the enduring ties that bind us all.
Darryl, a proud Noongar man, grew up in Kepa Kurl (Esperance) before moving to Boorloo (Perth) in his early adulthood. Living with limited verbal abilities, Darryl communicates using gestures and sounds, with painting providing him a creative outlet to express himself.
His bold, expressive style uses a mix of colour and texture across surfaces such as lamps, street signs, garments, and more. Painting is an activity Darryl enjoys daily, helping him stay connected and grounded.
A Supported Artistic Journey
For the past five years, Darryl has been supported in his artistic journey by Rocky Bay Team Leader Talei Mackenzie. Talei’s encouragement has helped Darryl develop his skills, deepen his cultural connection and share his unique perspective through his art.
Reconciliation WA Partnership
Through the National Reconciliation Week Street Banner Project, Snake Nest will feature in a state-wide celebration of culture, fostering conversations about art, connection and reconciliation.
