Meet Allison, one of our dedicated NDIS Support Coordinators at Rocky Bay! With a passion for helping others navigate the complexities of the NDIS, Allison plays a vital role in connecting participants with the right support. In this Q&A, we get an inside look at her role, her impact on our customers, and what drives her commitment to the disability sector.
Can you tell us about your role and what a typical day looks like for you?
The role of an NDIS Support Coordinator is very diverse. Everyday is different! The NDIS can be a tricky system to navigate and it is my role to help guide NDIS participants and their families. This level of guidance and support looks different for every customer.
A typical day involves lots of calls and emails! I connect my customers with supports, review funding allocations and my favourite part of any day is meeting and connecting with my customers and their families.
What inspired you to work in the disability sector space?
From a young age I knew I wanted to be in a role that helped others in a meaningful way. After finishing my Undergrad in Psychology, the disability sector seemed to be a great place to start… and well I have not looked back since! It is a privilege to be working in this sector.
What do you love most about your job and the impact you make?
I love that in my job I get to help a diverse range of people in different circumstances, from helping navigate a first NDIS plan to connecting long-standing participants with new supports.
Can you share a memorable story of how our services have made a difference in our customers’ lives?
My most memorable moment was one of my first specialist customers who was experiencing homelessness. We received the referral from their hospital discharge team and we were able to take them on for both level 2 and specialist support coordination. Working alongside my colleague and allied therapy team we were able to see this customer go from living in a hot restrictive caravan to thriving in a department funded home with daily supports. It was an amazing achievement and showed what an impact my role can have!
How do you and your team work together to support customers?
We truly have an amazing team of Support Coordinators here at Rocky Bay! As mentioned previously, NDIS can be a tricky system to navigate. We navigate this system as a team by leaning on each other for support and working together to try and achieve the best outcomes for our customers. Our team stays connected, sharing strategies and recommended supports.
What motivates you in your role?
Achieving positive funding outcomes for my customers is my biggest motivator. If there is a need that is not being met or a support that is required; I will do what I can to gather the evidence and justification to get the appropriate supports funded. The journey is often far from straightforward, but worth it when you get to see the final outcome in action.
What are three things you love to do outside your role?
Outside of my role I have the privilege of raising my amazing son, Spencer! I love spending time with my family, binge watching reality TV and listening to podcasts.
