The Rhythm Rangers program at Rocky Bay is helping children...
International Wheelchair Day is a day to celebrate the positive impact a wheelchair has on the lives of wheelchair users.
Caleb is a Rocky Bay customer, very independent and uses a wheelchair to support him when out in the community.
Rocky Bay Team Leader Abby McLennan said Caleb’s wheelchair is available to assist him whenever he needs it.
“If Caleb has a seizure out in the community, to allow him to still access the community and be mobile without the risk of him falling, he can use his wheelchair,” Abby said.
“He can climb up into his wheelchair, we’ll strap him in and that takes a load off his body and he can rest, so if he has another seizure he’ll be in the wheelchair safely,” Abby said.
As Caleb can fatigue quite easily due to the impact of his seizures, if he’s out in the community and going a long distance, he can use his wheelchair so he can go further and stay out in the community.
Caleb’s mother Louise said the wheelchair gives him a way to still be a part of activities and get to places that are hard for him to access via walking.
“We can do things in the community, and I feel more confident and a lot less stressed when Caleb is in the chair,” Louise said.
“There are more things we can do because I’m not as worried when he is in the chair, and he has a seizure.
“It keeps him safe in areas that have hazards for someone who has seizures,” Louise concluded.
